New research had found that only 50 percent of the population properly understand social enterprises, despite them being the fastest growing sector in the economy.
A report in startups.co.uk says that there are around 62,000 social enterprises in the UK that contribute £28 billion to the economy and employ over 55,000 people.
However a study by O2 and Social Enterprise magazine found that over half of those questioned did not realise that social enterprises made their money through trading rather than grants.
The paper also found that social enterprises were outperforming regular small businesses with 56 percent managing to improve turnover during the recession.
